Los acúfenos, se definen como la percepción de sonido, en ausencia de sonido y se experimentan de diversas maneras, alguns oyen sonidos como de grillos, o como el ruido del mar, o como rugidos, en la cabeza o en los oídos o alrededor de la cabeza y de otras multiples variantes más.
El acúfeno es un síntoma, no es una enfermedad y puede indicar una alteración en la función del oido o de la vía nerviosa de la audición.
Algunas veces los acúfenos pueden ser tratados con medicamentos o quirúrgicamente, todos los pacientes con acúfenos deberían consultar a un especialista en otorrinolaringología, antes de buscar cualquier forma de tratamiento.
Utilizamos variadas modalidades de tratamientos para los acúfenos, con el fin de proporcionar alivio a este síntoma.
Uno de los tratamientos es la Terapia acústica, que se aplica de variadas formas, otro de los tratamientos involucra la Medicación, que ayuda al paciente a controlar su ansiedad y/o su depresión, La investigación sobre el tratamiento de los acúfenos continúa y tenemos mucha esperanza y estamos atentos a futuros tratamientos en desarrollo.
Terapia Acústica.
Es una categoría de tratamiento usada en nuestro centro, consiste en el agregado y utilización de sonidos externos que pueden reducir la percepción de los acúfenos.
La Terapia acústica se realiza básicamente de dos maneras: con la técnica de reentrenamiento para acúfenos del Dr. Pawel Jastreboff o TRT (sus siglas en Ingles: tinnitus retraining terapy), o bien con el método de enmascaramiento para acúfenos (masking) desarrollado por el Prof. Jack Vernon, nosotros utilizamos ambos métodos, eligiendo uno u otro en relación a cada paciente.
Ambos métodos de Terapia Acústica incluyen el uso de generadores de sonido que se utilizan en los oídos, como variante, en vez de generadores de sonido pueden usarse cintas de audio, discos compactos (CDs) y unidades de mesa de luz, que ayudan con la concentración y con el sueño, tambien pueden utilizarse almohadas acústicas, provistas de pequeños parlantes y conectadas a diversas fuentes de sonido.
Audífonos.
Para algunos de nuestros pacientes, con disminución de la audición (hipoacusia) podemos indicarle un audífono, el uso de únicamente un audífono, puede proporcionarle un alivio para sus acúfenos, Los audífonos (llamados también otoamplifonos) amplifican los sonidos del ambiente y pueden hacer que los sonidos del acúfeno sean menos importantes.
Los instrumentos para acúfenos
Un instrumento para acúfenos es una combinación de un audífono + un generador de sonido, estas unidades proveen alivio a los pacientes con hipoacusia combinada con acúfenos.
Otros tratamientos
Además de la Terapia Acústica, varias otras categorías de tratamiento
se usan para los pacientes con acúfenos, con éxito, nosotros incluimos:
• Tratamiento médico
• Cambios en la dieta, en la medicación y en la actividad física
• Medicación para mejorar el sueño, reducir la ansiedad o la depresión
• Tratamiento psicológico y de reducción del estrés
• Tratamientos de relajación
• Tratamiento de los trastornos de la articulación temporo-mandibular

Seminario Internacional sobre acúfenos (tinnitus), al que concurrió
representando al Centro de Acúfenos de Buenos Aires, el Dr. Darío Roitman,
En el Seminario se desarrollaron diversos topicos sobre la tematica de
acúfenos, discutidos y presentados por autores de todas partes del mundo,
como podemos ver en el temario que figura a continuación.
Al fín del seminario se designó por votacion reñida a la Ciudad de Goteburg
en Suecia, como la sede del proximo Seminario que tendra lugar en junio de
2007, y el siguiente Seminario se hará en 2009, en Sudamerica, postulandose
Rio de Janeiro por Brasil y Buenos Aires por la Argentina.
